Before you choose

What every role asks of you

  1. Age 18 or older

You must be 18 or older at camp. Teens with diabetes can start in the Counselor-in-Training program.

  2. Three clearances

Every staff member passes three clearances, including an FBI fingerprint check, before camp. We email you how after you register.

  3. Training before camp

Every staff member trains with the team before campers arrive. See what you learn.

  4. Diabetes is welcome

Many of our staff have type 1 diabetes themselves. Campers look up to them, and you can be one of them.

  5. What it costs you

Camp roles are unpaid. Your meals and a bed in a cabin are covered during camp week.

  6. Letters and credit

We can write letters for school, work or service hours. Ask your school or residency program whether camp counts for credit.

Counseling team

Spend the week with a cabin

Counselors are with their campers all week, from the morning check to lights out. We especially welcome male counselors. (Setebaid to confirm the wording)

  • Counselor. Lives in a cabin with campers and makes sure they have the best week of their summer. Works with a Head Counselor.
  • Senior Counselor. Has worked at camp before. Passes news between the Head Counselor and the cabin's counselors, and helps the cabin work as a team.
  • Head Counselor. An experienced leader who coaches the Senior Counselors and Counselors in one area of camp and keeps campers safe.
  • Program Educator. Teaches one or more camp activities, such as archery or crafts, and builds a program that campers look forward to each day.

Health care team

Care for campers, and teach them

The health care team keeps campers safe day and night and helps them learn to manage their own diabetes. Licensed roles work under the camp's Medical Director.

  • Physician. Cares for the campers assigned to you and helps them build their diabetes skills. Needs a Pennsylvania medical license.
  • Physician Resident. Cares for campers under a camp physician or the Medical Director. Licensing depends on your program, so ask us at least six months before camp.
  • Physician Assistant Student. Works in a counseling role and helps the medical team, under a physician. You must be in a training program that partners with Setebaid.
  • Nurse. Cares for campers and staff under the Medical Director, and helps campers learn to care for themselves. Needs a Pennsylvania nursing license.
  • Dietitian. Makes sure every meal fits campers with diabetes, and helps campers build their food and carb skills.
  • Student Dietitian. Helps the Dietitian with meals, snacks and the campers' food skills.

Most health care volunteers come through their hospital, school or residency program. The Medical Director or the Head Dietitian talks with you before you send the form. If your program does not work with us yet, email us.

Camp is also a place to learn. Residents and students join morning teaching sessions and see diabetes care up close, all day. Read about training future health professionals.

Administration team

Plan the week, lead the team

These leaders plan camp during the year and run it during the week. Most of these roles suit people who have worked at camp before.

  • Camp Director. Plans and runs the camp, and interviews, welcomes and supervises all of its volunteer staff. A year-round volunteer role: several hours every week, and more as camp gets close.
  • Assistant Camp Director. Helps plan and run the camp, including the Counselor-in-Training program, and keeps the week safe and fun.
  • Medical Director. Leads all medical care at one camp and is responsible for the health of campers and staff. Needs a Pennsylvania medical license.
  • Health Services Administrator. Runs the non-medical side of health care, such as records and tracking, so the medical team can focus on campers.
  • Program Director. Plans the activities, theme days and evening programs, including the Counselor-in-Training program, so the week is safe and fun.
  • Head Dietitian. Leads all food service and nutrition teaching at one camp, and supervises the dietary staff.
  • Counselor-in-Training Director. Mentors the teens in the Counselor-in-Training program as they build maturity and leadership.
